RESUMO

This study evaluated the body condition score (BCS) at calving and breed (B) effects on milk composition, yield, performance, physiological parameters, hemogram, blood metabolites, and urinary metabolites in the transition and early lactation periods of Mediterranean (MED) and Murrah (MUR) buffaloes. Twenty MED and fifteen MUR buffaloes were distributed into four experimental treatments, in a completely randomized design, considering their racial groups and BCS (LBCS = low; HBCS = high): LBCS MED (N = 9); HBCS MED (N = 11); LBCS MUR (N = 8); HBCS MUR (N = 7). Animals were monitored during the last 21 days of gestation and first 56 days postpartum and kept under the same management and feeding conditions. During data collection, milk composition, yield, performance, physiological parameters, hemogram, blood metabolites, and urinary metabolites were evaluated. Higher milk production and fat-corrected milk were observed in MED than MUR buffaloes. Breed effects were observed on body weight, rectal temperature, glucose, urea, calcium (Ca) concentrations, and BCS effects on total protein, albumin, urea, and Ca. There were BCS effects on hematocrit, neutrophils, eosinophils, and interactions between B × BCS for lymphocytes and platelets. There were breed effects on urinary concentrations of chlorine, uric acid, and interactions between weight (W) × B on chlorine and urea. The MED buffaloes can be considered the most prepared to undergo physiological changes, including the BCS value at calving, indicating higher physiological health. Besides, this study demonstrates more considerable preparation for the calving, regardless of the body condition score at calving.

RESUMO

In this study, numerical approximations were generated to analyze the behavior of glycemic variations in the non-diabetic population of the Mexican republic. The main objective of this work is to obtain an overview of the glycemic variations in the non-diabetic population from different socioeconomic statuses in Mexico (Medium-high, medium, and low). Thus, evaluating the effect on the glucose level under a healthy diet considering the socioeconomic capabilities of the population. Through the national health and nutrition survey of Mexico 2020 and the Mexican food base, 1420 virtual patients were proposed (522 low status, 485 medium status and 413 Medium-High status) focused on simulating the glycemic behavior in each of the survey participants. Considering that the average food expenditure of the Mexican population is $107.00 MXN, and the cost of a healthy diet is $66.50 MXN, the economic sustainability of the Mexican population to adopt a healthy diet is revealed. The particularity of this work is focused on obtaining diverse data that are difficult to access in the development of population analyses. Such is the case of the approach proposed for different socioeconomic statuses. In this way, the proposed methodology provides a framework for complementary research contributions to the subject.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: the mandible undergoes changes in morphology and density related to the aging process. These changes are measured by radiomorphometric indices that allow inferring bone density indirectly. Also, the age estimation process in adults is challenging since the modifications in the anatomical structures are gradual and require long intervals of time to be noticeable. OBJECTIVE: this study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of radiomoformometric indices of the mandible in age estimation in adults. The sample consisted of 230 digital panoramic radiographs of individuals of both genders (115 men and 115 women), with chronological ages between 20 and 81 years, where radiomorphometric indices were obtained in the premolar region and the mandible ramus, using the software ImageJ. An analysis of variance was conducted considering individuals' gender and age group classification categories with Tukey's post hoc test. RESULTS: a downward trend was observed in means indices values for the older age groups, showing lower values for females. Based on the interaction detected between gender and age groups, multiple regression models were applied to estimate age. These showed a better adjustment for males between 50 and 59 years (R2=82,85%) and males over 60 (R2=80,16%). CONCLUSIONS: the radiomorphometric indices used in this study allowed to infer age from 50 years onwards in males.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the replacement of ground corn by crude glycerin and soybean meal by cottonseed cake, in association or not, on feedlot lambs' feeding behavior. Thirty-two non-castrated crossbred ½ Dorper ½ Santa Inês lambs, with an average body weight of 18.52 ± 3.24 kg (mean ± standard deviation), were distributed in a completely randomized design, into four treatments and eight replicates per treatment, in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme. Four experimental diets were tested with different sources or combinations of energy and protein ingredients in the concentrate, respectively: (1) ground corn + soybean meal; (2) ground corn and cottonseed cake; (3) crude glycerin and soybean meal; and (4) crude glycerin and cottonseed cake. The glycerin decreased dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) (P < 0.001) intakes, whereas it increased times spent in feeding (P = 0.009; from 21.8 to 28.6), rumination (P = 0.006; from 56.2 to 67.2), and chewing (P < 0.001; from 79.4 to 97.2), in minutes/100 g of DM. Feeding efficiencies of DM (P = 0.003) and NDF (P = 0.008) were decreased by the diets. Protein sources increased (P = 0.018) the times spent in chewing and per period in rumination (P = 0.014). Cottonseed cake, as a protein source, up to a 112 g/kg DM level, can totally replace soybean meal in diets for feedlot lambs without effects on the intake, behavioral activities, and feeding efficiencies. In contrast, the crude glycerin energy source is not adequate to replace ground corn in lambs' diets.

RESUMO

Chronic low-grade inflammation is strongly related to the etiology of diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM), and the expression of inflammatory cytokines may be modulated by polymorphisms located in the regulatory regions of the NFκß, IL-1ß, IL-6, TNFα, and LPL genes. We considered it particularly important to investigate the relationship of gene polymorphisms involved in chronic inflammation with the risk of T2DM or uncontrolled biochemical parameters. METHODS: We included 199 individuals with a T2DM diagnosis and 213 individuals without a T2DM diagnosis. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses were used to assess polymorphisms. RESULTS: We found a risk association between T2DM and uncontrolled biochemical parameters in a Mexican population for the genotypes del/del of NFκß, -174 and -572 of IL-6, C/C of IL-1ß, -308 and -238 of TNFα, and T/T of LPL. In subjects without diabetes (controls), we found an association between the G/C genotype of the -572 polymorphism and the G/C and C/C genotypes of the -597 polymorphism of IL-6 with the risk of glucose levels > 131 mg/dL. Genotype C/C of polymorphism -174 of the IL-6 gene was associated with high triglyceride levels, and levels > 5.8% of HbA1c were associated with the G/A genotype of TNFα -308. CONCLUSION: Here, we describe for the first time the relationship of T2DM risk and uncontrolled biochemical parameters with polymorphisms in the NFκß, IL-6, TNFα, IL-1ß, and LPL genes in a Mexican population. We also showed that for the population included in this study, there is an additive effect of the polymorphisms of the studied genes that considerably increases the risk of developing T2DM.We also showed that there are interactions between genes related to chronic inflammation that affect the risk of T2DM.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to compare the methods of Willems et al., (WI and WII) in estimating the forensic age in Venezuelan children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective and observational study was performed on 516 orthopantomographs of individuals of both genders (6-18 years) in order to evaluate the stages of dental maturation described by Demirjian et al. Using the dental age (DA) in the seven left inferior teeth, DA was calculated using the WI and WII methods. The mean difference between the chronological age (CA) and DA was calculated using a paired-sample t-Test. RESULTS: The under-estimation of age by both methods (0.17+/-1.75 years) was observed, with the CA-DA difference being statistically significant (P=.04). Considering all age groups, WII showed the smallest difference between CA-DA (0.05+/-1.40 years) in girls, while a smaller difference was found for WI (0.04+/-0.54 years)for boys. In a subsample up to the age of 16, there was an under-estimation of age in females for WI (0.03+/-1.23 years) and an over-estimation for WII (-0.18+/-1.24 years). In the males both methods over-estimated the age (W1=-0.21+/-1.17 years, WII=-0.06+/-1.20 years). CONCLUSIONS: The accuracy of the methods varied according to gender and age group: however, both were applicable to the studied sample

RESUMO

The objective with this study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of water inclusion on the chemical composition and fermentation profiles of reconstituted corn grain silage. The experiment was carried out in a factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design, with three replicates per treatment. Five treatments were evaluated with different levels of water inclusion (% of the natural matter): dry corn grain (control); 90% dry corn grain (DCG) and 10% water; 80% DCG and 20% water; 70% DGC and 30% water; and 60% DCG and 40% water, totaling 45 experimental silos. Inclusion of water in the silage of reconstituted corn grain promoted a reduction in the CP (%) and NDF (%) contents. However, the water increase elevated the NPN/TN contents and the amount of effluent, gas and dry matter (%) losses. The treatment with inclusion of 30% water in the natural matter leads to a better fermentation profile and fewer losses of effluent and dry matter, so it is recommended for ensiling dry ground corn grain.(AU)

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the carcass and meat of goats fed diets containing cactus meal (pectin source) replacing corn (starch source). Twenty-eight goats with an average initial weight of 16 ± 2.02 kg were confined in a completely randomized design with four treatments (the replacement levels of 0, 330, 660, and 1000 g kg-1 of dry matter) and seven replicates. The productive performance of the animals was not affected by the replacement of corn by cactus meal. The carcass commercial yield and the dressing percentage decreased with the addition of cactus meal levels in the diets. The commercial cuts, however, especially prime cuts like hind limbs and loin, were not changed by the use of cactus meal. Muscle:bone and fat:bone ratios and muscularity index of hind limbs were influenced by the substitution. The protein and ash contents of the longissimus lumborum muscle decreased while cholesterol levels increased with the presence of cactus meal. Sensory traits of goats' meat fed cactus meal in the diets were not affected. The substitution of corn for cactus meal reduced carcass yield but did not change the yield of commercial cuts or the qualitative characteristics of the meat.

The global recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) to give "exclusively breastfeeding during the first six months of life" is considered by mothers and health professionals a nutritional goal suitable for any mother who can and wants to make it. It is important to point out that the so-called "Third World", with millions of disadvantaged people, was and is the fundamental objective of the dissemination and implementation of a very broad WHO health program, which includes this recommendation. The socioeconomic and cultural circumstance in our western area is different and with a history, well established with recommendations from the ESPGHAN, which have made compatible said WHO recommendation with the introduction of complementary feeding since 4 months. Therefore, this recommendation should be applied with flexibility in our pediatric field and monitor the risks of iron deficiency that may result

RESUMO

Abstract Results obtained in studies can contribute to the advancement of science and innovative methods and techniques for developing practical activities. Reporting conditions that may restrict the implementation of research is critical to ensure the optimal development of further technical studies. The objective of this study was to assess the walking stability of R. dominica on a flat and smooth surface. The study was based on the determination of mortality, morphology and walking stability of the insect outside the grain mass, on a flat and smooth surface. Mortality of adults of this Coleoptera in conditions with and without food was similar, which explains the difficulty that this insect had for accessing the food source on the flat and smooth surface. The measurements of body length (BOL), width (BOW) and height (BOH) of R. dominica were compared with those of Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), which showed good ability to walk in these conditions. This study indicated that the former presents lower BOL and BOW, and greater BOH than the second, and all these variables showed differences when analyzed simultaneously by means of the construction of multivariate morphometric indices (Width × Height, Length × Height and Height × Length × Width). These morphometric variables, together with the definition of the geometry most similar to the body shape, resulted in determination of the center of gravity (CG) and static rollover threshold (SRTgeom) for both species. Rhyzopertha dominica and T. castaneum presented CGs considered high and low, respectively, and together with the values obtained for SRTgeom, may justify that R. dominica can be considered a less stable species during movement, and presents greater risk of rollover on flat and smooth surfaces.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a methodology to optimize computed radiographic techniques to image the skull, chest, and pelvis of a standard patient. METHODS: Optimization was performed by varying exposure levels with different tube voltages to generate images of an anthropomorphic phantom. Image quality was evaluated using visual grading analysis and measuring objective parameters such as the effective detective quantum efficiency and the contrast-to-noise ratio. Objective and subjective evaluations were compared to obtain an optimized technique for each anatomic region. RESULTS: Gold standard techniques provided a significant reduction in X-ray doses compared to the techniques used in our radiology service, without compromising diagnostic accuracy. They were chosen as follows 102 kVp/1.6 mAs for skull; 81 kVp/4.5 mAs for pelvis and 90 kVp/3.2 mAs for chest. CONCLUSION: There is a range of acceptable techniques that produce adequate images for diagnosis in computed radiography systems. This aspect allows the optimization process to be focused on the patient dose without compromising diagnostic capabilities. This process should be performed through association of quantitative and qualitative parameters, such as effective detective quantum efficiency, contrast-to-noise ratio, and visual grading analysis.

Lactose intolerance (LI) is the most common malabsorption syndrome in childhood and adolescence. It manifests itself as pain, abdominal trouble, diarrhoea, flatulence, abdominal distension, nausea and even vomiting. Lactose is a disaccharide present in milk which is hydrolysed through the action of lactase-phlorizin hydrolase (LPH). Thus, LI occurs when, for different reasons (transitory infections or genetic), the LPH diminishes/loses its function, inducing a deficiency in lactose digestion. As in this situation dairy products are often withdrawn, special care must be taken to monitor calcium intake and, due to its particular dependence on this, bone mineral density (BMD). BMD is an important factor in preventing osteoporosis and, as good bone mass in adulthood will depend on that built up in childhood, special attention must be paid to nutritional aspects. There are different dietary options for this purpose, such as lactose-free milk or milk with a low lactose content, as well as plant-based drinks or calcium-rich foods; however, the latter two options are nutritionally inadequate as milk substitutes (AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study proposes an experimental model to assess the consequences of gastric surgeries on gastric motility. We investigated the effects of proximal gastrectomy (PG) using a non-invasive technique (alternate current biosusceptometry [ACB]) on gastric contractility (GC), gastric emptying (GE), and orocecal transit (OCT) after the ingestion of liquids and solids in rats. METHODS: Twenty-four male rats were subjected to gastric motility assessment before and after the PG procedure. The GE and OCT results are expressed as the mean time of gastric emptying (MGET) and cecum arrival (MCAT). The GC recordings are presented as the frequency and amplitude of contractions. KEY RESULTS: Mean time of gastric emptying after solid meals were significantly different (p < 0.001) between control and PG (113 ± 5 to 99 ± 6 min). Mean time of cecum arrival ranged from 265 ± 9 to 223 ± 11 min (p < 0.001) and 164 ± 9 to 136 ± 17 min (p < 0.050) for solid and liquid meals, respectively. The assessment of GC showed that surgery decreased the phasic frequency (4.4 ± 0.4 to 3.0 ± 1.1 cpm, p < 0.050) and increased the amplitude of contractions (3.6 ± 2.7 to 7.2 ± 3.0 V/s, p < 0.050). No significant difference was found in tonic frequency. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES: The ACB system was able to assess GE, OCT, and GC in gastrectomized rats. Overall, PG accelerated GE and gastrointestinal transit, likely due to the increase in both intragastric pressure and amplitude contraction. Our data presented an efficient model to investigate functional consequences from gastric surgeries that will allow further studies involving different procedures.

RESUMO

The objective of the present study was to optimize a radiographic technique for hand examinations using a computed radiography (CR) system and demonstrate the potential for dose reductions compared with clinically established technique. An exposure index was generated from the optimized technique to guide operators when imaging hands. Homogeneous and anthropomorphic phantoms that simulated a patient's hand were imaged using a CR system at various tube voltages and current settings (40-55 kVp, 1.25-2.8 mAs), including those used in clinical routines (50 kVp, 2.0 mAs) to obtain an optimized chart. The homogeneous phantom was used to assess objective parameters that are associated with image quality, including the signal difference-to-noise ratio (SdNR), which is used to define a figure of merit (FOM) in the optimization process. The anthropomorphic phantom was used to subjectively evaluate image quality using Visual Grading Analysis (VGA) that was performed by three experienced radiologists. The technique that had the best VGA score and highest FOM was considered the gold standard (GS) in the present study. Image quality, dose and the exposure index that are currently used in the clinical routine for hand examinations in our institution were compared with the GS technique. The effective dose reduction was 67.0%. Good image quality was obtained for both techniques, although the exposure indices were 1.60 and 2.39 for the GS and clinical routine, respectively.
